Het boek biedt een rijk geïllustreerde reis langs grote bouwwerken in België en in het buitenland, voornamelijk gebouwd door leden van de Vereniging der Belgische Aannemers van Grote Bouwwerken (ADEB-VBA). De Vereniging, opgericht in 1936 (kort na de crisis van 1929), streeft naar een betere beroepsstructuur en naar het stimuleren van belangrijke bouwwerken, als motor voor de werkgelegenheid in België en in het buitenland. Tachtig jaar later getuigen de vele opgeleverde werven ervan dat deze doelstelling gehaald is. Het boek bestaat uit tien min of meer chronologische delen: van het Plan van de Arbeid tot het Marschallplan, de wederopbouw of het 'Belgisch mirakel', Expo 58, het gouden tijdperk van de openbare werken, honderd jaar ontwerptechnologie in de bouwwereld, restauratie van het bouwkundige erfgoed, de overgang naar de euro, duurzaamheid en ecologie en, tot slot, de toekomst.

Issues du Mouvement moderne, les villes de La Grande Motte (1974), Brasília (1960) et Chandigarh (1953) se caractérisent chacune par des architectures assez distinctes. Ces trois œuvres du patrimoine contemporain nous interpellent sur la place de l'homme dans la cité et la promesse d'une utopie. Lumière, espaces consacrés, liberté de mouvement permettent une disponibilité, pour rêver, être habité. L'interaction entre les photographies de Stéphane Herbert et la poésie de Carole Lenfant invite à une promenade urbaine ponctuée par les jeux d'ombre et la densité des couleurs. Accord architectural, temporalité des corps, le voyage commence autour des pyramides de Jean Balladur, passe par les coupoles d'Oscar Niemeyer puis se termine sur l'esplanade du Capitole de Le Corbusier. Des plages de la Méditerranée à la nouvelle civilisation qu'est le Brésil jusqu'à l'Inde immémoriale : invitation à méditer sur trois villes anticonformistes et oniriques, trois villes ouvertes et universelles. Born from the Modern Movement, the cities of La Grande Motte (1974), Brasília (1960) and Chandigarh (1953) are each characterised by their distinctive architecture. These three works of contemporary heritage question man's place in the city and the promise of utopia. Light, dedicated spaces and freedom of movement provide a readiness to dream, to be lived in. The interaction between Stéphane Herbert's photographs and the poetry of Carole Lenfant invites one to an urban promenade punctuated by games of shadows and the density of the colours. The Spanish architect Rafael Moneo (b. 1937) has won numerous awards (including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize), yet this publication is the first to offer a critical study of his career as a whole-not only his many built works and projects but also his contributions to teaching and his writings. The book begins with a comprehensive biography, covering Moneo's education, teaching appointments, and encounters with historians and architects in Europe and the United States, such as Peter Eisenman, Jorn Utzon, and Bruno Zevi. Also included is a discussion of some of the buildings that he has designed, notably the Prado Museum extension and Atocha Station in Madrid.

Maki and Associates, the office of Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and publishes this volume along with an eponymous exhibit to commemorate it. As such, it is a record of the broader context of the office’s half-century of design activity, its priorities and interests, and the social character that its works have subsequently achieved. Reproduced here are a wealth of images, including photos of realised projects, architectural images from early stages in the design process, and drawings, sketches, and diagrams. Together with essays and personal insights from Maki himself, it presents a rich history of this seminal architect.
