Abstract

Abstract

Born from the Modern Movement, the cities of La Grande Motte (1974), Brasília (1960) and Chandigarh (1953) are each characterised by their distinctive architecture. These three works of contemporary heritage question man's place in the city and the promise of utopia. Light, dedicated spaces and freedom of movement provide a readiness to dream, to be lived in. The interaction between Stéphane Herbert's photographs and the poetry of Carole Lenfant invites one to an urban promenade punctuated by games of shadows and the density of the colours. Architectural harmony, temporality of the body, the voyage begins around Jean Balladur's pyramids, passes by Oscar Niemeyer's domes, then ends on the esplanade of Le Corbusier's Capitol. From the beaches of the Mediterranean to the new civilization that is Brazil to immemorial India: an invitation to meditate on three anticonformist and dreamlike cities, three cities that are open and universal.

Abstract

This title is a reference work on modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton, one of today's leading architectural theorists. Conceived as a genealogy of twentieth century architecture from 1924 to 2000, it compiles some sixteen comparative analyses of canonical modern buildings ranging from exhibition pavilions and private houses to office buildings and various kinds of public institutions. The buildings are compared in terms of their hierarchical spatial order, circulation structure and referential details. The analyses are organized so as to show what is similar and different between two paired types, thus revealing how modern tradition has been diversely inflected. Richly illustrated, this book is a new standard work in architectural education.

Abstract

The Spanish architect Rafael Moneo (b. 1937) has won numerous awards (including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize), yet this publication is the first to offer a critical study of his career as a whole-not only his many built works and projects but also his contributions to teaching and his writings. The book begins with a comprehensive biography, covering Moneo's education, teaching appointments, and encounters with historians and architects in Europe and the United States, such as Peter Eisenman, Jorn Utzon, and Bruno Zevi. Also included is a discussion of some of the buildings that he has designed, notably the Prado Museum extension and Atocha Station in Madrid.

Abstract

"Aldo van Eyck (1918-1999) was a Dutch architect, writer, and teacher who helped redefine Modern architecture in the second half of the 20th century. As an advocate for architecture's engagement with history, culture, climate, and the lived human experience of buildings and urban spaces, he created designs that privileged place and the daily rituals in the lives of its inhabitants over universal ideals. In this volume, enlivened by 300 illustrations from the Aldo van Eyck Archive, Robert McCarter provides the first comprehensive study of Van Eyck's 50-year career since his death, guiding readers through the architect's buildings and unrealized projects, with a focus on the interior spatial experience and on the design and construction processes..."

Abstract

Maki and Associates, the office of Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and publishes this volume along with an eponymous exhibit to commemorate it. As such, it is a record of the broader context of the office’s half-century of design activity, its priorities and interests, and the social character that its works have subsequently achieved. Reproduced here are a wealth of images, including photos of realised projects, architectural images from early stages in the design process, and drawings, sketches, and diagrams. Together with essays and personal insights from Maki himself, it presents a rich history of this seminal architect.

Abstract

Bucky Inc' offers a deep exploration of Richard Buckminster Fuller's work and thought to shed new light on the questions raised by our increasingly electronic world. It shows that Fuller's entire career was a multi-dimensional reflection on the architec-ture of radio. He always insisted that the real site of architecture is the electromagnet-ic spectrum. His buildings were delicate mobile instruments for accessing the invisible universe of overlapping signals. Every detail was understood as a way of tuning into hidden waves. Architecture was built in, with, for and as radio. Bucky Inc. rethinks the legacy of one of the key protagonists of the twentieth-century. It draws extensively on Fuller's archive to follow his radical thinking from toilets to telepathy, plastic to prosthetics, and data to deep-space. It shows how the critical arguments and materi-al techniques of arguably the single most exposed designer of the last century wereoverlooked at the time but have become urgently relevant today.--Provided by publisher.
